- Jamila Malafa was decorated as commodore, which is similar to the rank of a brigadier-general in the Nigeria Army
This is a new trend away from history for females in Northern Nigeria as there is now a female military officer, not just an ordinary officer but a General.
Jamila Malafa, was decorated in Abuja as the first female military officer to come from the northern part of Nigeria.
Malafa was decorated with the rank of commodore, which is similar to the rank of a brigadier-general in the Nigeria Army.
According to Henry Babalola, who is the chief of policy and plans (COPP) at the naval headquarters in Abuja, he said the attainment of the new position by Malafa was a thing of joy and called for celebration.
He said only a handful of the female gender had achieved such height in the Nigerian armed forces. He added that part of her success was as a result of the training exposures she got from the Nigerian Navy.
He further said that her historical elevation which have brought about change will serve as a source of inspiration to women especially those in the armed forces and prove to them that there is no limit to the heights they can achieve in their chosen careers.
An excited Malafa said; “I am the first female of northern extraction to be promoted to the rank of a General in the Nigerian Navy."
Malafa further said the promotion has inspired her to be more loyal and dedicated in her duties to the Navy and Nigeria.
The new General is a native of Gombi local government in Adamawa state and was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy in 1990.
