Nigerian Vice-President, proffessor Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday complained about the bad condition of the country's detainment facilities (prison) expressing that the prison facilities have swung prisoners to animals.
He clarified that the bad conditions in the Nigerian prison service was terrible to the point that any individual who went out of thier, would have changed to an animal.
The VP expressed this in Abuja amid the official introduction of the Nigerian Prisons Survey Reports, an exploration work embraced by the Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action in collaboration with the Nigerian Prisons.
The vice president, who was represented by the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, noticed that it would take a long time to work on the facilities to some standardized levels.
Expressing his experience in a visit to Port Harcourt detainment facilities on Wednesday, Dambazau noticed that the prison which was built in 1918 for 800 detainees, is right now lodging 5,000 prisoners.
He revealed " I went to the Port Harcourt detainment facilities yesterday, While I was sitting tight for my flight, I went to the jail . What I saw is an impression of a considerable amount of things in the review .
"The PH jail was commissioned in 1918, meaning its over 90 years since its establishment,For quite a while, our jails had been dismissed on the grounds that that jail, when it was built in 1918 was intended to contain around 800 detainees however today, it is containing more than 5,000 and I see that exceptionally irritating."
He included, There is no space for detainees and anyone who goes into that place as a person is turning out to an animal.
In the event that I need to state all that I saw at the Port Harcourt detainment facilities, the media would devour it. However, no doubt, it is extremely exasperating and we should take care of the jails.
