- New Lagos State bill set to make religious organizations pay tax
This is the first of it kind in Lagos, South Western part of Nigeria, Henceforth, according to the Lagos State House of Assembly, Religious organisations such as mosques, churches will now start paying taxes in Lagos.
A bill under review for the land use charge in Lagos state has undergone a second reading on the floor of the state House of Assembly during the law makers plenary on Thursday, December 28.
The billed titled: “A Bill for A Law To Repeal The Land Use Charge Law 2001 and Enact Land Use Charge 2017 and For Connected Purposes” was later committed to the a committee led by Yinka Ogundimu representing Agege II.
According to a Speaker of the House, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, revealed the law was out to increase the internal revenue generation of the state which happens to be the largest in Nigeria.
He however, assured that the house would not leave out religious organisations in the law because according to him most of the worship centres are making money.
He said the only body that would be exempted are the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).”
