5 Nollywood Alaba pirates have been arrested


Five individuals suspected to be pirates have been nabed by police for pirating Nollywood films, and have been charged and remanded in jail over copyright encroachments.

The charged are David Chukwudi, Austin Igboukwu,Ugochukwu Ukwuagu, Chukwuka David and Ndu Celestine.

The nollywood pirates, who professedly committed the offense under the pretense of exchanging mainstream at Alaba Market, showed up at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi in Lagos, accused of copyright encroachment.

The suspects Chukwudi, David and Celestine were charged on 11-tally charge verging on copyright encroachment and utilization of premises to advance copyright encroachment.

Other pirates Igboukwu and Ukwuagwu were charged on 13-tally charge likewise verging on copyright encroachment.

During the first arraignment the prosecutor, Barrister Kehinde Oluwole.from the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, said that Chukwudi, David and Celestine made the offense on August 14, 2017 in the premises of the Alaba International Market, Lagos.

He said the pirates manufactured parcels for uncensored Nollywood films that include: "Jenifa's Diary", "Ruler of War",

"The Village War", "My children and I", "What I need", "Osinachi my better half'', among others, for unlawful marketing.

It will be recalled that most nollywood producers have been campaigning against piracy and also begging the state and FG to intervene in the matter.
