- Pres. Mnangagwa recounts unknown details of his “great escape” from Zimbabwe in 2017
African country, Zimbabwe was in the news late last year as the country witnessed a change of power for the first time in over 30 years reign of Robert Mugabe.
The new President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has gone public on his journey while fleeing the country through landmine areas following his sack as Vice President by the then president Robert Mugabe in 2017.
According to the state-run Zimbabwe Herald on Saturday, it disclosed that Pres. Mnangagwa had recounted previously unknown details of his “great escape” from Zimbabwe, in an official visit to Angola.
75 year old Mnangagwa, escaped from the country to Mozambique after he was sacked by Mugabe. He left the country within four hours of his removal as he scared of a imminent threat to his life.
He said; “I didn’t think it was pleasurable to wait to be eliminated. I left within four hours of being fired for the Mozambican border”.
The president disclosed that he was moving on his feet for long hours as he stated that there were attempts at the border to shoot him but he was saved by his son who foiled the attack.
Further report stated once he was within Mozambique, he flew from Beira to South Africa.
Pres. Mnangagwa disclosed an attempt to poison him during an event organized by ZANU-PF party back in 2017. He revealed he was flown to South Africa for treatment.
He however, fingered the then first lady, Grace Mugabe of having been the one that gave him a poisoned ice cream at a party.
He finally said; “I am happy that last week, I was declared poison free. It is now undetectable."
