- US commends Liberia for its successful election, congratulates George Weah
United States of America in a new statement has joined the rest of the world to congratulate citizens of Liberia on the successful conclusion of the presidential run-off election which brought in Ex world football player turned politician, President-elect George Weah to victory.
The White House, via it Press Secretary, described the presidential election as a symbol which is “a major milestone for Liberia’s democracy”.
It should also be noted that this is the first peaceful transfer of power in Liberia in more than 70 years.
According to the statement, the United States commends the effort of the country's electoral board, National Elections Commission for administering a peaceful and orderly election process.
It further read; “We also recognise the important role Liberia’s Supreme Court, political parties, security forces, and civil society organisations played in holding a peaceful and transparent contest.”
The US also reached out to the Vice President Joseph Boakai for his positive campaign and years of honourable service to Liberia.
The U.S. however, stressed that it remain committed to a longstanding relationship with Liberia and Liberians as it assured to support the success of the historic democratic transition and the peace and prosperity of Liberia.
The outgoing Female President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is expected to step down in January after two terms in office, which would make her the longest serving female president in Africa as she handover to Weah.
