- Pres. Buhari gives reason for Fulani attack
The main topic in Nigeria right now is the Fulani herdsmen attack on people especially the one going on in Benue.
The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has broken the silence as he has provided some reasons why Fulani herdsmen and other locals especially farmers clash continuously in the country.
According to an Email from President Buhari, to a media outfit, Reuters, who sought his reaction to the clashes across the different parts of the country, disclosed the major cause of the crisis is Nigeria’s growing population.
Of late, the rate the deadly clashes between herdsmen of Fulani origin and farmers has been on the rise with the recent one which led to the death of 73 people in Benue.
According to Reuters, the Nigerian Presidency said the scarce availability of land made both parties adopt all means to meet their need.
The media outfit quoted the presidency as saying “President Buhari holds the view, as do many experts, that these conflicts are more often than not, as a result of major demographic changes in Nigeria."
He said the population which was around 63 million when the country gained independence in 1960 had grown close to 200 million with the land size still the same and development have reduced the land area for peasant farming and cattle grazing.
