The major reason for the meeting is to discuss on the forthcoming Winter Olympics tagged 'Peace Olympics' by South Korea after months of tensions over the North nuclear weapons programme.
The venue for discussion which is in Panmunjom, the truce village in the Demilitarized Zone that separate the peninsula became possible following the N'Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un indicating interest via his New Year's speech that the North may send in delegates to next month's Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The S'Korea Government had replied with an offer for dialogue last week. The first change that was noticed was that the hotline between the two countries was restored following a suspension close to two years.
S'Korea sent a five-member delegation which was led by unification minister Cho Myoung-Gyon as they travelled to Panmunjom in a convoy of vehicles, as citizens wish them good luck, on the other hand N'Korean delegates with similar number of people led by senior official Ri Son-Gwon, walked over the Military Demarcation Line at Panmunjom for the talks.
The two head of the delegates, Cho and Ri shook hands in a business manner at the entrance to the Peace House, which is the building on the southern side where the discussions were being held.
The representative of the North, Ri in usual manner wore a badge on his left lapel with a picture of Kim Dynasty which include the country's founding father Kim Il-Sung and his son and and the present leader, Kim Jong-Il while Cho also had a lapel badge on which showed the South Korean flag.
Ri said; "Let's present the people with a precious new year's gift."
Cho replied him saying that Seoul believed that the Pyeongchang Games "will become a peace Olympics as most valuable guests from the North are going to join many others from all around the world".
He added that people have the desire to watch the North and South move toward peace and reconciliation.
Aside from the Olympics talk, there are possibility that the North would want the South to end it military exercise drill with the US.
